Overview
The Moon is the card of unverified material. It sits between The Star’s corrected orientation and The Sun’s full disclosure, and it describes the interval in which a practitioner has enough information to act but not enough to be right. Its subject is not deception. Its subject is partial light — the specific epistemic condition in which every object present is real and every outline is unreliable.
Read structurally, the card is a warning about method rather than about circumstance. It marks readings where the querent’s own account of the situation is the weakest evidence available. The Moon does not say the fear is unfounded; it says the fear and the fact have not yet been separated, and that separation is the work.
Structure & symbol
A path runs from the foreground pool to a gap between two towers, then out of frame. A crayfish emerges at the water’s edge. A dog and a wolf face the light and give voice — the domesticated and the untamed responses to the same stimulus, drawn identically. Above, the moon carries a face in profile and sheds fifteen drops of light, or dew, back onto the ground it illuminates.
Three features carry the reading. The light is reflected, not generated: everything the card shows is second-hand. The path is continuous but its destination is cropped, which is a compositional statement about incomplete evidence rather than about danger. And the crayfish rises from the pool without ever leaving it — the material has surfaced, but it has not been landed.

Upright meaning
Upright, The Moon indicates a reading conducted under insufficient information, and it asks the practitioner to name which part of the account is testimony and which part is observation. The distinction matters because the two degrade differently: observation loses detail, testimony acquires it. Where the querent’s story has grown more coherent over time, treat the coherence as suspect.
The card also governs material that surfaces from below the working threshold — old patterns, inherited assumptions, the dream register. Such material is admissible as evidence of state, not as evidence of fact. The distinction is worth stating plainly to a querent, because it protects a genuine source of information from being either dismissed or over-trusted.

Reversed meaning
Reversed, The Moon describes the collapse of that useful uncertainty into false clarity. The querent has resolved the ambiguity prematurely, usually by selecting the interpretation that requires the least change, and now reports certainty where the evidence has not moved. This is the more difficult position to read, because the presenting affect is calm.
Occasionally the reversal is genuine dispersal: the distortion has lifted and the outline holds under daylight. Distinguish the two by asking what new information arrived. If nothing arrived and the doubt vanished anyway, the doubt was suppressed rather than answered. Either way the reversal is a note about procedure rather than about content: nothing in the situation has been settled, only the querent’s willingness to keep the question open has changed, and that is a variable the reader can address directly.

Positional reading
In the past position, The Moon names a period the querent still cannot describe accurately, and it should lower your confidence in every subsequent card that depends on that account. In the present it is a procedural instruction: gather, do not conclude, and set a date by which the question will be asked again. In the future it is rarely an outcome. It usually indicates that the outcome cannot be read yet because a determining variable is still submerged — a spread drawn too early rather than a fate drawn badly.
Beside The Star, The Moon tests a correct orientation against obscured ground: the aim survives, the route does not. Beside The Sun, it forms the clearest sequence in the trumps, disclosure following obscurity, and the pair should be read as a timeline rather than a contradiction.
